I have a similar problem.
If I work with the local MySQL server all is working fine.
But if I change the server on emm.properties and cms.properties to a remote database (Amazon RDS endpoint), the CMS still works fine but I get famous
"Failed to setup database interface"
Changing the hardcoded ...

I'm in the same situation here.
I can login and use the CMS but I get the
Failed to setup database interface.
I am using a separate instance for the DB though, it is running on Amazon RDS.
I can connect to the DB using the command line and agnitas user has the proper permissions...
